Spray Paint Booth Airflows
When investing in a paint booth, matching the booth’s airflow style to your business needs is one of the most important decisions to be made.
The choice of airflow styles impacts every aspect of operations, from capital and operational costs to finish quality and workplace safety.
Downdraft
Downdraft booths have a vertical airflow, with the air intake at the top of the booth and exhausting through a pit in the floor. This is the preferred style for high-quality finishing, as it minimizes contamination from debris and overspray. The installation and maintenance costs for downdraft booths will be higher than other styles.
crossdraft
Crossdraft booths have a horizontal airflow, with the air entering at the front of the booth and exhausting at the rear. Without the need for a pit in the floor, crossdraft booths are easier to integrate into existing facitilies, and are easily pressurized for climate control, making them generally less expensive upfront, with lower operating costs. There is an increased chance of contamination and less control of overspray.
Side Downdraft
In side downdraft paint booths, the air intake is at the top of the booth and is assisted by gravity to flow down toward the floor until it is exhausted at floor-level out the sides of the booth. With no need for a pit, the initial investment for this style is less than a downdraft booth, although these booths have a larger footprint. Side downdraft booth offer a higher level of contamination control and higher operational costs than a crossdraft paint booth.

Semi-downdraft paint booths are a hybrids of crossdraft and downdraft booths. The air intakes from the the ceiling in the front 25% - 30% of the booth and is pulled to the back, exhausting at the rear. This diagonal stream can produce dead air spots, making these booths less appropriate for extremely high quality work than a downdraft booth, but they offer lower installation and operating costs.
